The Sartorial Startover

School may be out, but your preppy style can and should live on. We’ve gathered 5 must-haves that will help you graduate from basic to collegiate-cool once and for all. Breathe easy, this is one do-over you’ll rave about.

1. The Backpack

Good news, the backpack is still going strong. And the must-have version is neater and chicer than the back-breaking knapsack you used to carry your books in. Time to get (back) on the backpack bandwagon.

Why you should wear it: Something structured, in suede or textured leather will stand the test of time, get you admiring looks and hold all of your essentials. Top marks all around.

2. The Schoolboy Blazer

No we're not talking about the bland crease resistant blazer you used to sport, but its younger, Snapchatting sister that’ll help you cut a sophisticated silhouette. Take our word for it, this updated version is the blazer (2.0) of your dreams.

Why you should wear it: All of your favourite street style stars have one. With cropped sleeves and a slightly shrunken fit, it will flatter in all the right places. But if you still need convincing, go for a collarless herringbone pattern blazer with contrast piping for a modern twist; it will easily double as outerwear in warmer months.

3. The Polo Shirt

Like it or loathe it, the polo shirt is going nowhere. Once the definition of dowdy, it’s now been upgraded to librarian chic, thanks in part to luxe and lightweight fabrics – think cashmere and cotton poplin – and playful embroidery.

Why you should wear it: Forget the button down, you’ll get an A+ for upgrading to lace-collars or polished styles with pointelle cut-outs. Try yours tucked into a leather A-line skirt.

4. The Gingham Dress

So you swore up and down you’d never be seen in another gingham dress. You may have even tried to dispose of your ink-stained version once upon a time, but that was then, this is now. From sleeve inserts to bell-bottom trousers, gingham is all grown up and should be at the top of your wishlist.

Why you should wear it: A chic off-shoulder ruffle dress will erase any bad memories of hours doing long division. Style it with backless loafers to keep it chic yet carefree.

5. The Trainers

Face it, box fresh trainers look good on and off the umm…playground. They’re also the easiest, most fuss free way to stay comfy on the go. And if the sportsluxe and athleisure trends are anything to go by, they’ll add a seriously sleek finish to your look.

Why you should wear it: Dresses, denim, leather dungarees, they go with anything. Whether you opt for the seen-everywhere bow-tie style or edgier studded leather designs, you will look back and wonder how you ever did without them.
